The Window Seat
看题目 ↓1Lin Hao had booked the window seat weeks earlier. The last hour of the train trip to Qingdao ran along the coast, and he wanted the best view of the sea. On the morning of the trip, the train departed twenty minutes late.
2An old man sat down across the aisle. Again and again he turned toward the window on Lin Hao's side, although there was nothing to see but the grey wall of the station.
3When the train finally left the city, the old man began to talk. He was on his way to his old captain's eightieth birthday party. “I worked on his fishing boat for forty years,” he said. “Now I live inland with my daughter. I haven't seen the sea for years.”
4Lin Hao looked at his window, then at the old man. He stood up. “Would you mind swapping seats with me?” he asked. “I feel a bit sick when I sit by the window.” It was not true, but the man agreed immediately.
5Twenty minutes later, the sea came into view. The old man put his hand on the glass and said nothing. From the aisle seat, Lin Hao could see only a small part of the water.
6In Qingdao, the old man took a small shell out of his pocket and pressed it into Lin Hao's hand. “For the boy who gave me the sea,” he said.
